Dongfeng’s M-Hero brand continues to make waves with its latest creation, the M-Hero M800, an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) SUV that’s capturing attention and sparking curiosity. This robust off-roader, stretching 5.2 meters in length, is no ordinary SUV, equipped with a 1.5-liter Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and CATL’s ternary battery, positioning itself as a formidable contender in China’s burgeoning market for rugged off-road vehicles.
M-Hero, derived from the Chinese term “Mengshi,” draws inspiration from Dongfeng’s acclaimed armored military vehicles, solidifying its position as the brand’s upscale New Energy Vehicle (NEV) offering. While Dongfeng continues to market traditional petrol-powered versions under its banner, M-Hero is Dongfeng’s global venture into the electric vehicle arena, eyeing markets in Europe and the Middle East. Following the successful debut of the M-Hero 917 SUV in August, the M800 is poised to leave its mark.
Leaked details from the M-Hero product roadmap indicate plans for three models – M18-1, M18-2, and M18-3 – featuring Electric Vehicle (EV) and EREV powertrain options. Assembled at Dongfeng’s Wuhan plant, production targets set at 5,000 units for M18-1 and 15,000 units for M18-2 annually. The M18-3 is anticipated to hit the market in 2026.
Sharing its exterior styling with the M-Hero 917, the M800 showcases sharp lines, a distinctive grille, and larger overhangs. Notably, it features a rooftop drone helipad, embodying an adventurous spirit. With dimensions measuring 5,136 mm in length, 2,172 mm in width, and 2,063 mm in height, the M800 slightly outstrips the 917 in length, yet maintains a comparable 2,950 mm wheelbase. Despite its off-road prowess, the M800 opts for a four-seat interior layout, hinting at a focus on urban driving.
While tailored for city cruising, the M800 retains impressive off-road capabilities with 24 and 30-degree approach and departure angles, riding on 275/65 R20 front wheels and 295/60 R20 rear wheels. Weighing in at 3,270 kg with a gross weight of 3,740 kg, it’s a robust city car indeed.
Powering the M800 is a 1.5-liter petrol-powered ICE engine generating 197 hp, acting as a generator rather than directly powering the wheels. Although specific details are scarce, speculation suggests a shared powertrain with the M-Hero 917, boasting three electric motors producing a combined output of 816 hp. The electricity is sourced from CATL’s ternary (NMC) battery pack.
With its larger size and luxurious four-seat layout, the M800 is anticipated to come with a higher price tag compared to the 917. Future plans also include an all-electric version. Priced around RMB 700,000 (approximately €91,000), the M800 reflects its substantial build and features, setting the stage for an exciting chapter in Dongfeng’s electric vehicle journey.”
