Genesis: The Luxury Brand from Hyundai
Genesis, the South Korean luxury car brand, has achieved a significant milestone by selling over 1 million vehicles worldwide in just 8 years. This achievement underscores the brand’s rapid growth and strong presence in the global automotive market. Genesis, which is part of the Hyundai Motor Group, has managed to establish itself as a respected and sought-after luxury brand in a relatively short period.
Genesis G80 Sedan: The Best Seller
Among the various models offered by Genesis, the Genesis G80 sedan stands out as the best seller, contributing to approximately 39% of the brand’s cumulative global sales. This makes the Genesis G80 sedan the flagship model of the Genesis lineup.
Genesis’s Beginnings
The Genesis brand has an interesting history. It originally started as a Hyundai concept car in 2003 but did not immediately become an independent brand. Instead, Hyundai introduced luxury models like the Hyundai Genesis and Hyundai Equus, which later laid the foundation for the Genesis brand.
It wasn’t until November 2015 that Hyundai Motor Group officially launched Genesis as an independent luxury brand. From that point on, Genesis began its journey into the global market.
Genesis in the Global Market
Genesis initially began selling cars in its domestic South Korean market before expanding its operations to include North America, Europe, China, Australia, Russia, and the Middle East, totaling 17 markets. As of August 2023, Genesis proudly announced that it had surpassed the 1 million mark in cumulative global sales, with a total of 1,008,804 vehicles sold.
Notably, the South Korean market played a significant role in this achievement, accounting for the majority with 690,177 units sold. Overseas markets contributed an additional 318,627 units, solidifying Genesis’s position as a global luxury brand.
Genesis G80 Sedan: The Top Performer
What might come as a surprise is that the best-selling model of the Genesis brand isn’t an SUV but the Genesis G80 sedan. The Genesis G80 sedan recorded impressive sales of 390,738 units, making up 39% of the brand’s total sales. This success can be attributed to the fact that the first generation of the Genesis G80 was introduced in 2016 as an updated version of the Hyundai Genesis, marking the beginning of the distinct Genesis brand.
Success in the SUV Segment
While the Genesis G80 sedan takes the top spot, Genesis has also seen success in the SUV segment. The brand’s two SUVs, the GV80 and GV70, collectively achieved 173,882 and 160,965 sales, respectively, since their introductions in early and late 2020. These SUVs have played a crucial role in expanding the brand’s presence in the luxury SUV market.
Continued Growth
Genesis’s growth in recent years has been remarkable. Sales figures have surged from 132,450 units in 2020 to 201,415 units in 2021 and further to 215,128 units in 2022. This upward trend is expected to continue in 2023, with a new sales record anticipated. By the end of August, 154,035 units had already been delivered. This growth can be attributed to the brand’s expanded product range and the increasing presence of dedicated “brand experience spaces” worldwide, which have played a pivotal role in enhancing brand visibility and competing effectively against well-established German rivals.
Future Endeavors
Looking ahead, Genesis has exciting plans for its future. The brand is set to introduce the GV80 Coupe and a facelifted version of the GV80 later this year. Additionally, there is a mysterious “new model in an entirely new segment” on the horizon, which could hint at a sporty two-door offering or even a convertible.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Genesis has also made a commitment to sustainability. The brand aims to become a zero-emission brand by 2030, with plans to launch only electric vehicles from 2025 onward. Genesis also has its sights set on achieving carbon neutrality by 2035, aligning itself with the global push for a more sustainable automotive industry.
