With Solar Panels, the $263,000 Lightyear Zero Can Last Up to Seven Months Without Additional Charges

Lightyear, a Dutch startup, hopes to take the electric car market forward with its new car the Lightyear Zero

Lightyear says that the production of the Zero is not be a dream. Lightyear also stated that the first deliveries could be made as soon as November.

Lightyear started by trying to make an efficient EV. Its shape gives it a drag coefficient of 0.19. This compares well with the Mercedes EQXXX concept. It should be the most aerodynamic family vehicle on the market when it is released. It's slippery and light. It weighs at 3,472 lbs (1.575 kg) and is slightly heavier than a Toyota Supra. It measures 16.4 feet (5,000mm) and is slightly shorter than the BMW 7 Series.

This allows the Lightyear Zero to store 54 square feet (5 meters) of patent-pending double-curved solar panels. These allow it to charge at any time the sun shines on it.

According to the automaker, the vehicle can produce a solar yield of 6,835 miles (11,000 km) per annum. It can recover up to 43 miles (70km) per day of sunlight in optimal conditions.

Lightyear estimates that customers who use their car daily for a commute of 22 miles [35km] could be free for up to seven months in sunny countries.

The automaker estimates that the car can travel 388 miles (625km) on a single charge, ignoring solar charging. The car can travel 348 miles (560km) at highway speeds of 68mph (110 km/h).

Lightyear 0 will be priced at EUR250,000 (or 263,243 USD at current exchange rates). They will produce only 946 units per year. However, it plans to make a similar model aimed at mass-market audiences, starting at EUR30,000 ($31 589 USD). The car's production will begin in the latter part of 2024/early-2025.
