After 8 years, Tesla turns free lifelong navigation into a monthly subscription for new customers

Automotive subscription services are trending as the economy leans in that way. Tesla, one of the first firms to offer monthly subscriptions, is adding another. After eight years, new buyers must pay for regular connectivity.

Tesla's four-vehicle lineup offers two connectivity bundles. Standard connectivity includes only navigation. The Premium package adds live traffic visualization, music streaming, an internet browser, video streaming, and the handy Sentry Mode.

Standard has always been free, but Premium costs $9.99 + tax per month or $99 per year. Tesla hasn't announced price for the Standard package beyond eight years, but purchasers will have to pay to keep navigation.

Modern smartphone navigation systems may dissuade buyers from doing so. Tesla may add certain Premium features to the regular package over the next eight years, making it more appealing. Used-Tesla owners have little to fear for now.

Those who buy before July 20, 2022, get Standard Connectivity for life. Tesla's website says (via Teslarati):
