Renault R5 Turbo 3E Is An EV Homologation Special

Renault honored the iconic supermini with a one-off electromod R5 Turbo homologation special before unveiling the new R5 EV. The R5 Turbo 3E concept has 375 hp and a gaming-inspired exterior.

The R5 Turbo 3E is a follow-up to the R5 Turbo and R5 Turbo 2 production models from the '80s. This one is electric, as the E suggests.

Renault engineers could make it insanely powerful, but they chose 375 hp (280 kW / 380 PS) from rear-mounted electric motors, more than double the output of the original ICE-powered models. The concept is a "pure drifter" with 700 Nm of rear-wheel torque.

Underfloor 42 kWh lithium-ion battery powers the powertrain. Renault didn't announce range, but a 380V charge takes 2 hours. The battery weighs 520 kg (1,146 pounds), but the rest of the vehicle is 980 kg (2,160 pounds).

The hot hatch accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds (or 3.9 seconds in Drift mode), with a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph).

The R5 Turbo 3E is a modern reinterpretation of its predecessors, with exaggerated proportions and video game-inspired styling.

The concept is 4,006 mm long, 2,020 mm wide, and 1,320 mm tall, with a 2,540 mm wheelbase (96.5 inches). All but the height are increased from the ICE-powered R5 Turbo.

The carbon fiber body has a fancy livery, pink plexiglass for the greenhouse, and 19-inch front and 20-inch rear aero-style rims with mixed tires (225/35R19 front and 325/25/R20 rear).

The redesigned bodykit includes a front splitter, yellow-painted intakes, ultra-wide front and rear fenders, and a massive rear spoiler.

Pink, blue, and yellow LED strips replace the headlights, and the bumper has rally-style LEDs. Smaller taillights leave more room for openings. The bonnet scoop now houses the battery charging port, and the inlets provide a great view of the EV underpinnings.

Inside are two carbon-fiber racing seats by Sabelt, a 10-screen digital instrument cluster, a retro-style dashboard, tartan and Alcantara upholstery, and a drift-style handbrake.

"Drifty" the teddy bear helps passengers relax after a drift show. The driver can select Turbo (drifting), Track Invader (playing), Donut (360-degree spins), etc.

10 camera mounting brackets inside and outside the vehicle capture tire-burning footage. During the R5 Turbo 3E's debut, the driver and co-driver will wear La Fameuse suits.

The R5 Turbo 3E will debut at Chantilly Arts & Elegance 2022 on September 25 before the 2022 Paris Motor Show. The Renault 5 Diamant was the automaker's first electromod concept this year.
