Quad-motor BMW iX3M and iX4M may be electric SUVs

BMW has put a M badge on two electric vehicles, the i4 and the iX, but neither is a "full M car."

According to one of the Bavarian automakers' parts suppliers, the two electric SUVs may be revealed next year.

The iX3 (pictured below in M Sport guise) and iX4 had different code designations than the M models, suggesting they are more than just M Sport variants (like the aforementioned i4 M50 and iX M60).

We didn't know BMW was planning an electric X4 (which will be called the iX4), so that was also a surprise. We don't know how powerful these new M EVs will be, but they'll surpass the 544-hp i4 M50.

BMW unveiled a quad-motor EV prototype. It was based on the i4 M50 but had wider wheel arches and tires, like the M3 and M4.

BMW engineers have said the new four-motor setup is different from what powers the current i4, so we don't know how much power to expect.

BMW says the wait will be worth it, but we don't know when the first M EV will debut. Hot versions of the iX3 and the yet-to-be-revealed iX4 will be the public's first exposure to such a vehicle.

BMW has done this before, so it's logical. The automaker introduced the X3 M and X4 M (and the S58 engine) before the M3 and M4 sedan and coupe models.

The Bavarian automaker probably expects to sell more SUVs than electric sedans and coupes.
