Blizzard is retooling Overwatch 2's hallmark mode to improve competitive play. Blizzard highlighted changes coming to Competitive ahead of the game's launch, including new skill-tier divisions, new prerequisites to unlock ranked, and a more sophisticated scoreboard.

Blizzard said new players must win 50 fast play matches and complete the "first-time user experience" to enable Competitive play in Overwatch 2.

This should ensure everyone in ranked has enough experience and prevent new players from jumping in too early. Returning players with Overwatch rankings can instantly return to Competitive play.

Overwatch 2's Competitive mode will monitor player ranks differently. Overwatch 2 will use skill-tier division instead of a straight number, starting at division 5 and going up to division 1 before advancing to the next tier.

Players won't notice their game-to-game improvement, either. Blizzard will update rankings every seven victories or 20 losses.

The updated scoreboard in Competitive mode replaces medals with kills, fatalities, and assists. These categories should help players understand how their match is going and what they can do to win.

Overwatch 2's Competitive mode is also getting quality-of-life improvements including enhanced post-game reporting and stat tracking. Overwatch 2 replaced portrait levels with Battle Pass levels.
