New 2023 Toyota Highlander engine replaces 3.5 V6 in Europe

Toyota announced the Highlander for the European market in May 2020. In Europe, the 2023 model year delivers a new engine, new innovation, and new personalization possibilities.

First deliveries of the 2023 Highlander are expected in the fourth quarter.

Like the US-spec 2023 Highlander, the European model gets a new 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Toyota says the new engine produces 269 hp (198 kW), 4 hp (3 kW) more than the US model, and we expect 309 lb-ft of torque (419 Newton-meters). Despite significantly lower numbers than the preceding 3.5 V6, the carmaker promises "excellent acceleration response and torque delivery."

The new 2.4-liter engine is only available in Eastern Europe, which may disappoint European purchasers. In the West, the 2023 Highlander has a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine and front and rear electric motors.

The system produces 248 horsepower (182 kW) and 146 g/km of CO2. Toyota believes this is the segment's best power-to-CO2 ratio.

2023 Highlander in Europe gets a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. The tech now includes cloud-based navigation with real-time traffic data, over-the-air software updates, 3D city mapping, and more.

New for 2023 is a redesigned digital instrument cluster. The new style is three-dimensional and configurable to four themes.

In Europe, every 2023 Highlander has a wireless charging pad. Apple CarPlay is wireless, but Android Auto is cabled. Remotely lock and unlock autos and trigger danger lights.
