Kia Sorento and Sportage owners warned against indoor parking

Less than a month after 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride owners were warned about a fire risk, a similar recall was issued for select Kia Sorento and Sportage models.

Foreign material and moisture contamination on the tow hitch harness module's PCB could cause a short circuit. This could ignite a tow hitch harness module.

Mobis Parts America supplied the hitch harness. Kia's Safety Office has detected multiple tow hitch harness-related fires, including a 2016 Sorento.

Three Kia Telluride cars with the same tow hitch caught fire in Canada.

2016-2022 Kia Sorentos constructed between Oct. 27, 2014 and Sept. 12, 2022, 2021-2023 are recalled. Kia Sorento Hybrids constructed from September 2, 2020, to August 31, 2022, and 2017-2022 Kia Sportages built from December 10, 2015, to December 7, 2021. This recall affects 70,887 vehicles.

Kia is still working on a fix and encourages owners of affected vehicles to park them outside and away from structures until repairs are made.

Kia has told its dealerships not to sell the tow hitch harness and to return any unsold harnesses. On November 9, 2022, dealers and owners will be notified of the recall.
