Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 N will be faster than the i30 N and be the performance division's new flagship.

Albert Biermann, former head of Hyundai's N division and current executive technical advisor, spoke with Drive about the EV's performance.

He confirmed it will be faster than the Hyundai i30 N. "Why is it slower? It's 600 horsepower.” Biermann said the final horsepower figure could be 580, 600, or 620. These numbers are similar to the 577 hp of the Kia EV6 GT, which could power the Ioniq 5 N.

Biermann said speed won't be the car's focus. "Faster doesn't matter," he said. "Giggle, heartbeat." It's fun? What's your smile like?

The sound of Hyundai's N models' exhaust systems makes them fun to drive. Biermann said the high-performance EV will have music.

He told Drive that's the biggest challenge. "We have tons of speed." When I joined the company, we focused on reducing noise, but now we're adding sound to electric cars to excite drivers.

As for the "popcorn" sounds, it's difficult to mimic a dynamic combustion explosion with cabin speakers. Sound is important, but not everything. The Ioniq 5 N will be all-wheel drive, but it will have a 'drift' mode.
