Ford and SK begin Kentucky battery campus building

BlueOval SK, the Ford-SK On battery joint venture founded in July 2022, has started building its electric car battery production site in Kentucky.

The Glendale BlueOval SK Battery Park is building two 43 GWh Ford and Lincoln electric car battery facilities. Opening in 2025. In September 2021, both partners announced four eMobility plants in Kentucky and Tennessee, naming Kentucky as one of them.

Both partners are investing $5.8 billion in the 1,500-hectare battery production complex's two neighboring facilities, the state's largest single investment.

SK reported that nearly 400 state, county, business, and resident representatives, including Governor Andy Beshear, attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

In 2025, building and installation must be completed in the first quarter. After "test runs," Ford and Lincoln batteries will be made, although no date is given.

“Right here in Kentucky, Ford and SK are teaming forces to lead the future of the EV industry,” stated Chey Jae-won, Executive Vice Chairman, SK Group.

Ford and SK On began building a battery and electric car facility in Tennessee in September 2022. Three BlueOval SK battery plants produce 129 GWh yearly.

“To power nearly 1.2 million units of the Ford F-150 Lightning, the electric version of America's best-selling pickup truck,” the business estimates.
