In June 2020, the facility produced its 5,000,000th automobile. This BMW X5 M Competition was followed by record-breaking plant productivity. In 2021, it produced 1,500 automobiles per day and 433,810 cars total. The facility can produce 450,000 vehicles each year and employs 11,000 workers.

The Spartanburg facility produced the E53 X5 from 1999 to 2006. Dr. Robert Engelhorn, CEO of BMW Manufacturing, announced Plant Spartanburg has produced 1 million vehicles since June 2020. "I'm proud of our employees' tenacity during this unstable period." World-class people make world-class cars.”

The plant's productivity has only risen. The 1992-opened facility took 14 years to produce its millionth Z4 M Roadster in 2006. As BMW's largest facility, it produces the X3, X4, X6, X6, X7, and the flagship XM.

BMW's Spartanburg plant exports SUVs worldwide, making it the country's top auto exporter. Spartanburg also produced the Z3 (1995-2002) and Z4 Roadster/Coupe (2003-2008).

Dr. Engelhorn: "When we broke ground 30 years ago, we had no idea BMW's legacy in South Carolina would be so profound." Today, we produced our 6 millionth BMW. We also look forward to the end of the year, when manufacture of the BMW XM will begin.
